Filipe Luis to join Diego Costa at Chelsea

18th July 2014 by tomw

fuerzatigreAtletico Madrid will see another of their stars from last season depart for Stamford Bridge after Chelsea agreed a fee for defender Filipe Luis. Striker Diego Costa made the move earlier this month for £32m, following weeks of speculation, and the Brazilian left-back will join him in London.

Luis, 28, is likely to replace Ashley Cole who left the club for Roma and become the club’s first-choice left-back. The defender will now agree personal terms with the Blues after the clubs agreed on a £20m deal, and complete a medical in the coming days.

With Atletico Madrid last season, Luis enjoyed plenty of success, reaching the Champions League Final and winning La Liga under Diego Simeone. The pair went to Stamford Bridge in the semi-finals of the Champions League and clearly left an impression on boss Jose Mourinho as Los Rojiblancos won 3-1 to progress to the final.

Atleti lost the final to Real Madrid 4-1 after extra time and some members of the squad have started to leave. On-loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been recalled by Chelsea and will link up with two of his old teammates from last season, and Adrian has also left the club, joining Porto.

The club has strengthened since then however, by bringing in Jan Oblak to replace Courtois, and Mario Mandzukic for Costa. Guilherme Siqueira will probably fill Luis’ vacant spot now after moving from Benfica/Granada earlier in the summer.

Luis was part of the triumphant Brazilian squad which won the 2013 Confederations Cup, but was only named on the standby list for the World Cup this summer. He has four caps to his name and could earn more now Felipe Scolari – another link to Chelsea – has been dismissed.

Cole’s old number three jersey will be given to the Brazilian when the move is completed and will join fellow compatriots Oscar, Willian and Ramires at the club.
