Ronaldo Abused By Fans

16th January 2014 by nickh

It’s been a remarkable week for Cristiano Ronaldo, he has won his second Ballon D’Or, been named in the UEFA team of the year (at the expense of Lionel Messi), and last night he scored one of the goals that sent Real Madrid into the Copa Del Rey round of eight. But it seems that not everybody is feeling the love for CR7.

ballondimierdaRonaldo had been the red hot favourite to win the Ballon D’Or, despite facing stiff opposition from Messi and Franck Ribery, and footballers from across the globe rushed to offer their support for him on the social networks. Former tem-mate Rio Ferdinand tweeted that he would ‘run down the street butt naked’ if Ronaldo didn’t win. Thankfully it didn’t come to that.

It is to be expected that fans of Barcelona and even local rivals Atletico would not appreciate Ronaldo getting the award but just two days after his triumphant night in Zurich, Cristiano was getting roundly abused by the Osasuna fans in Pamplona.

He was booed and barracked throughout the match but the chants were loudest after his fortuitous goal courtesy of a goalkeeping howler. To the tune of Guantanamera the home fans rose as one to sing: “Balon di mierde, Cristiano, balon di mierde.”

Ballon D’Or, of course means golden ball – the fans were saying that he deserved a whole different kind of award. I could translate it for you, but we are a family friendly website. Spanish television was debating the chants long after the match had finished and a surprising number of viewers were in support of the Osasuna crowd. Ronaldo will have to let his feet do the talking – after all, that’s what he’s best at.
