The scoreline is a little flattering, Sociedad are an in-form side and more than held their own in the first half. A David Villa goal, from a Diego Costa cross, on 38 minutes was all that separated the teams.
Simeone’s team were much better after the break. It was Costa himself who scored the second on 72 minutes. The naturalised Spaniard is finding his goal scoring touch again after a mini drought. Miranda headed the third on 78 minutes, and new signing Diego completed the scoring. It is Diego’s second time at the club after an earlier spell on loan from Wolfsburg.
It was an emotional night all round. Aragones was on the minds of players and fans alive. Fitting then, that the match should see them reach the summit of La Liga for the first time in 18 years. Weekend slip ups by Barcelona and Real Madrid have left Atleti firmly in charge. A three point gap has now opened up, will it be closed?
