Stat Attack: Barca goals from outside the box double since Tito’s takeover

27th December 2012 by andym

Today we bring you an interesting statistic discovered by Spanish newspaper Marca. Whilst Barcelona have quite rightly been known to score the bulk of their goals from close range after a dazzling passing move, it seems the manner in which goals are scored has changed somewhat since new manager Tito Vilanova has come to town. … [Read more...]

Ronaldo to Man Utd speculation growing as latest contract offer from Real is snubbed

27th December 2012 by andym

It started out as a few Chinese whispers on this blog a couple of months back, that maybe, just maybe Portuguese midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo who was highly revered at his former club Manchester United may be on his way back to Old Trafford in the January transfer window. … [Read more...]

Lionel Messi – is this the peak of his career?

26th December 2012 by andym

You don't need a Spanish football blog to tell you that Lionel Messi has had an unforgettable year. With 91 goals and a third successive Balon Dor prize in the bag, it's a shame his club side Barcelona put a slight dampener on his incredible achievement by losing out on retaining both the La Liga title to fierce rivals Real Madrid and the Champions League to unlikely winners Chelsea. … [Read more...]

Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova has today had surgery on his salivary gland as he prepares to battle his second bout of cancer. Vilanova last year underwent similar surgery when a cancerous tumour was removed from his throat and now faces the same process with six weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy to follow. The Catalan club released a statement at 6pm last night confirming the reports which had streamed out prior to the official announcement. Club President Sandro Rosell expressed his unconditional support to Tito and his family. … [Read more...]

Falcao’s price tag just keeps rising

16th December 2012 by andym

Ex-Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neil must still have nightmares about that one fateful day in the January 2009 transfer window where he rejected a £7m offer of Club Atletico Riverplate's plucky young striker Radamel Falcao and opted to sign Emile Heskey instead. Many Villa fans will be wondering what could have been should the Colombian striker have signed for the midlands club that season and the likelihood is it would have been the best signing in their recent history judging by the striker's devastating form in front of goal this year. … [Read more...]

Lionel Messi – What Next?

12th December 2012 by tomw

At just 25, very few can claim to have rewritten history by their mid-twenties but Lionel Messi, as we are so often reminded, is not a regular human being. Whilst many of the same age look to grow up and plan for the next step though, Messi too has to enter a new phase of his career. Finished with 'Gerd Muller's Guide to Scoring Goals in a Calendar Year', Messi faces no choice but to divulge himself in another chapter of life like many of us have had to at some point. … [Read more...]

Mourinho expected to leave in June

6th December 2012 by tomw

Spanish newspaper Marca has been running extensive news stories and features about Jose Mourinho's exit from Real Madrid for the past week but there still remains much confusion about Mourinho's status within the Santiago Bernabeu. The tabloid first published rumours of Mourinho's departure on Monday, though lacking firm evidence, it stated that President Florentino Perez would negotiate a package for Mourinho in June 2013 as he'd had enough of the Portuguese boss trying to take control of the hierarchy. … [Read more...]

Mallorca’s winless streak continues – could they be going down?

5th December 2012 by andrewb

Mallorca missed out on a chance to go three points clear of the relegation zone after another lacklustre performance at the Iberostar Stadium. Their winless streak in La Liga stretched to nine games as they drew 1-1 at home to Real Zaragoza in a game which should have seen them emerge victorious. … [Read more...]
